Rudyard Kipling: Novelist Whose Eulogy Came 2-days Before He Died!

Rudyard Kipling was a master innovator in the creative art of short story books. He was the sculptor of our all-time favourite, The Jungle Book, the classic, Kim, and many more children books. Find more about him in this blog.

1. His first name was Joseph. The name Rudyard was taken from Rudyard Lake, in Staffordshire where his parents met.

2. In 1881, he wrote poems for the school magazine at the United Services College, published by his father as Schoolboy Lyrics.

3. Kipling was enthusiastic about writing in the newspaper, which he called, ‘mistress and most true love,’ Civil and Military Gazette. He began scribbling creative short stories in 1886 while working as an assistant editor for this paper.

4. Between 1886 and 1887, Rudyard Kipling’s thirty-nine stories appeared in the newspaper where he worked.

5. In 1887, Rudyard Kipling worked at The Pioneer, a larger newspaper company in Allahabad.

6. Kipling published his first collection of prose, Plain Tales from the Hills, in 1888, only at the age of 22.

7. He published six short story collections during 1888, including Soldiers Three, The Story of the Gadsby, In Black and White, Under the Deodars, The Phantom Rickshaw, and Wee Willie Winkie.

8. Rudyard drew the first figures for The Jungle Book while living in a cottage.

9. The creator of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle, once visited Rudyard at his cottage Naulakha.

10. He introduced the word cushy into the English language meaning easy or secure.

Rudyard Kipling died on January 18th, 1936, but his eulogy appeared in the newspaper two days before he died!
